are and what you're doing so we can have your perspective from there. can you send us your picture on twitter. and a lot of people bundling up wondering how many layers do i need this morning before i head downtown to the national mall. >> you want to be prepared here so several layers, particularly early. if you are headed out right now where our temperatures are below freezing, we should warm up into the mid-40s maybe for a time. time. >> definitely a big toughy day. of a he got the big puffy waiting for me. >> and for all this week. temperature at reagan national, 35 degrees now. and most of the area has dipped below the freezing mark. 30 at dulles and bwi marshall. looking at our satellite-radar, we have an arctic front on the move. it is pushing into the great lakes. you can see the cloud cover associated with. it as that comes hard charging through the area later this afternoon, our winds up ahead

of it will be out of the south today. we are thinking maybe low 40s, mid-40s in a couple of spots here during the day today with partly sunny skies but as that front moves in, wind pick up. maybe a few snow showers late this afternoon and tonight. we are in the arctic air for the remainder of the week. high temperatures tomorrow won't get out of the 20s. so make sure the furnace is working, that kind of thing. the cold around here will be dangerous starting tomorrow. there you go. temperatures falling late today and maybe a few snow showers as well. >> just a few snow showers. >> not enough to be a concern. >> thank you. let's check in with julie wright to get the latest on traffic. how it is looking out there? >> so far, so good. i know a lot of people are starting to take metro. it opened at 4:00 a.m. this morning headed into downtown. if you are traveling, which i strongly suggest you do not do traveling in towards the festivities, 66 coming across the tr bridge, the bridge remains open but you can't get

any further than 23rd street. so others you come off the bridge, there is nowhere to go. -- so, as soon as you come off the bridge, there is nowhere to go. keep in mind the memorial bridge will be closed offer to pedestrian traffic only. pedestrian traffic only coming across the memorial bridge. 66 remains open but where are you going to go from there? the freeway is open in each direction but the third street tunnel and the ninth street tunnel and 12th street tunnel have been closed off. i see a lot of people headed over towards metro to use that as their means of transportation headed into downtown. keep in mind, the service has been suspended on marc this morning because ever the festivities. there is a special inaugural traffic pattern if you will for those traveling on the penn line. make note of that if that is your way into downtown. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. traffic. back to you. >> thank you.

about 600,000 to 800,000 people expected to be on hand for today's public inauguration and parade. >> apts good idea if can you to take metro. there are some stations that are close for the celebration. -- it is a good idea if you can to take metro. karen gray houston is covering all things metro. >> reporter: god morning. we can't stress it enough. metro is your best bet for getting down to the mall for the inaugural festivities. the official start time for metro today was 4:00 a.m. but we did notice here at the gallery place station, the doors did not open to customers at exactly 4:00 a.m. there was a line at the top of the escalators at that time. the barriers were not lifted until about 4:13. some folks were anxious to get on the trains to go home. even more folk trying to get closer to the inaugural festivities on the mall.

>> i just got off so they are he not letting the bus come home so the best way home is the subway so i'm taking advantage of it. >> we have to head down to volunteer at d and seventh street for the inauguration. we are like official volunteers. >> what time are you supposed to be there? >> by 5:00. no later than 5:00. >> reporter: metro's hours today for your planning purposes open 4:00 a.m. until 2:00 a.m. peak fares are from 4:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. there are normal week day parking rates. parking fees will be charged when exiting. metro suggests that you plan your day without a transfer. it will make it easier. all five rail lines do have stops that are near the national mall. three metro stations will be closed today during the inaugural festivities. they are archives, mount vernon square and smithsonian. we are live at gallery place. karen gray houston, fox 5 news.

back to you guys. >> thank you. soon, spectator will be pouring into d.c. for a chance to be part of history. security is in place and the national guard is gearing up. >> if you are one of months heading out, we want you to be prepared. wisdom marten is down on the national mall with the last- minute reminders. very important there. >> good morning to you. investigator it is cold and chilly but people are still slowly making their way down to this area as they get ready for inauguration 2013. going be for a pretty big event today. last time this was a crowd out here on the national mall that stretched from the national capitol as far as the eye can see. they are expecting a pretty large crowd around this time as well. a couple of things to get down here early and dress really warm. also, you need to know about some openings. there is some locations opening on national mall. constitution avenue northwest between seventh and 12th, that will be open at 6:30 a.m.

also, independence avenue between seventh and 12th will be open at 6:30 this morning. also, you need to know, there are some things that you can not bring down to the inauguration. we'll put that graphic up for you as well. firearms, alcohol, backpacks, large bags, thermoses, coolers, signs, no animals. keep that in mind. it is cold. so dress warm when you come down here. you need to get here early because it is going be for a crowd at some point. may not be as big as last time but dim a crowd here. remember that fox 5 will be here all morning long with all kinds of updates. we have crews all over the place. stay tuned for fox 5. we have all you need to know about inauguration 2013. back to you. >> i know it is cold because you've already got theling earmuffs on. >> the hat is coming next. not getting warm enough out

its big story in sports this morning, the super bowl is set and it will be historic. this will be the first time the two teams will be coached by two brothers. jim harbaugh and the 49ers are heading to the big game after rallying from a 17-point deficit to beat the falcons 28- 24. john harbaugh and the ravens took on the patriots. baltimore quarterback joe flacco threw three touchdown passes as the ravens scored 21

and welcome back to fox 5 morning news on this inauguration morning. we'll take a quick check in with tucker barnes one more time. coldest weather of the year on the way. >> coldest in a couple of years on the way. we are talking dangerous windchills and temperatures around here tomorrow. >> tomorrow. >> tomorrow. >> don't scare me. >> today, if you are headed down to the mall for the ceremony, it will be january- like but not terribly uncomfortable. we'll have highs in the throw mid-40s here. we can deal with that. >> i think so. when i was looking at stuff and i saw ronald reagan's second inauguration was seven degrees, they had to move things inside, i was like this isn't so bad. >> if you went down four years ago this, go-round should be more comfortable than four

years ago when we had highs in the 20s. >> good to know. >> let's do temperatures right now. if you are headed out right now as we just saw on wisdom's live shot, it is cold out there. temperature, 35 degrees at reagan national. most of the area has fallen, i'm just looking. the entire area has fallen below freezing with the exception of quantico which is also 35 degrees. so the rest of the area at or below freezing. 32 in annapolis. good morning to you. 27 in frederick. fredericksburg, 30 degrees. it will be chilly. we'll probably lose a few more degrees at reagan national. i think we'll get awfully close to freezing before the sun gets up at about 7:20 this morning. here are your winds. they will be out of the south up ahead of our next front and they will start to pick up. it will be a bit breezy even late this morning, early afternoon. as the true arctic front comes through later this afternoon and tonight, our winds will be picking up here out of the north and west and they will be howling during the overnight hours gusting to about 25 to

30. that will allow this real cold air to settle in for the next couple of days. today, believe it or not, warmest day of the week. here is your satellite-radar. a little bit of cloud cover to start your day. i think we'll get partly sunny conditions for the first half of the day. as the front starts to get close later this afternoon, it will turn mostly cloudy. the arctic boundary up in the great lakes at the moment will come hard charging through the area later this afternoon. there could be a few snow showers locally here as well later this afternoon. not worried about any accumulating snow but if it really gets going, there could be some snow on the grassy surfaces later this afternoon. late day snow shower possible as that front moves through. winds out of the south at five to 10. they pick unlate this afternoon out of the north and west as that front gets in. 4degrees with winds out of the north and west gusting to 25. our wind chill temperatures will be in the teens tomorrow morning. snow showers possible, very cold and windy overnight. you want to see a very cold seven-day forecast in washington. that is what you call a cold

good morning. you are taking a live look at the u.s. capitol. flacks all out there getting ready for the ceremonies this morning to inaugurate president obama. we have a lot of out of town visitors here. i know what everybody wants to know is was the weather going to be like for the outside

activities today. take it away. >> it will generally cooperate. we've done much worse as far as temperatures in the years past. this year, it looks like we'll be in the low to mid-40s around the noon hour. >> not bad. >> and we can expect at least partial sunshine so it should be a decent day. the heads up here is we've got some cold air on the way. some real cold air later this afternoon and tonight. it is a chilly start to the day. 35 at reagan national. pittsburgh, 22. focus on the teens there north and west. chicago is 13 and detroit is 18. the arctic boundary will get through the washington area later this afternoon. for activities out there at midday, for the parade this afternoon, i think temperatures will top out in the mid-40s, low to mid-40s and then this cold air will really allow the temperatures to tumble later this afternoon and tonight. there is a look at your satellite-radar. we will see more and more clouds during the course of the day. partlysony start to the day and mostly cloudy by afternoon. could there be a few snow

right now. here is the southeast-southwest freeway. traffic is denied access to and from the third street tunnel from both the freeway and new york avenue. you are denied access to the third street tunnel. it remains closed at this time. coming across the 14th street bridge, you are denied access onto lower 14th street. all traffic coming out of the main line will be forced over to southeast-southwest freeway. metro, your way to go so far. plenty of parking available at all of our metro stops. we are keeping an eye on that as well. vre suspended service. brunswick and penn minds are working on a special inaugural train service for you. -- penn lines. >> as wave been telling you all morning, metro is the best way to get around. karen gay houston is live at the gallery place metro station in northwest with all things that you need to know about getting around on metro today.

>> good morning. can you say do not drive downtown? just don't do it. the best bet is to take metro. and because there is no parking, the streets are pretty much blocked off. you don't know where to expect the barricades. there is one here at seventh. you can't see it from here because of traffic. d.c. national guard is over there. they have their humvees off blocking seventh street right at the corner of h. now, metro's fill start time today was 4:00 a.m. but they got a late start at the gallery place stop. people were lined up to get to the trains but the barricade at the top of the escalators not removed until 4:13ish. to help you plan your day, metro's hours are from 4:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. peak fares from 4:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. parking rates are the normal weekday rates and to prevent congestion at suburban parking

lots, parking fees will be charged when exiting. now, three of the metro stations are going to be closed during the inauguration festivities. those are archives, mount vernon square and smithsonian. so plan your day accordingly. forget about trying to get off at archives mount vernon square or smithsonian and here is another reminder. metro says load up your cards at the start of your trip so that you have enough money to cover getting down to the mall and getting back. we're live at gallery place in chinatowgray houston, fox 5 news. back to melanie and sarah in the studio. >> and in just a few hours, the national mall will be packed with scores of speck stators. hundreds of thousands expected to take part in the presidential inauguration and also listen to his speech. wisdom marten live on the national mall with last-minute reminders for those of you

heading down to the mall today. good morning. wisdom think are you there? >> yes. >> good to see you. >> good to see you. good to talk to you as well. good to hear you as well out here in this cold here on the national mall. we are taking the pulse of the crowd down here on the national mall once the crowds do get down here. right now, people are starting to slowly filter in to this area as they get ready for inauguration 2013. last time it was packed all way from the steps of the capitol back past the washington monument and beyond. there were jumbotrons all over place to accommodate all the crowds here although they are not expecting that large of a crowd to come this time. they still do have the jumbotrons in place and they are expecting a big crowd even though it may not be as big as last time. a couple of things it tell you about. entry points, constitution avenue, northwest between

seventh and 12th. independence avenue between 7th and 12th as well. those locations will open this morning at 6:30. if you are coming down here, there are some items that you cannot bring to this location. five arms, alcohol, backpacks, large bags, coolers, strollers, signs, posters, animals. it may sound strange but those are the rules if you are coming down. we will be down here throughout the morning. we'll try to talk to some of the people as they slowly start to filter in here and take part in inauguration 2013. get a feel and try to compare it to last time. talk about smt ropes they came if they came last night compared to why they decided to come back again, deal with the cold we are. we have got it. we are all over inauguration 2013.

-- talk about some of the reasons they came. >> the same list of items probed also applies if you plan to attend the inaugural parade. the parade is set to begin around 2:40 this afternoon when president obama, the first lady, vice president biden and dr. jill biden depart the capitol and lead the parade. there are a few local groups marching. the miy sound of maryland marching band from the university of maryland, the 54th massachusetts volunteer infraptery regiment company b headquartered in silver spring. we'll also see the majestic marching knights from d.c.'s ballou high school. they have the honor of marching right behind the float honoring dr. martin luther king, jr. and finally dogs and the people they serve. they will come down pennsylvania avenue as well. as this historic day plays out, we want to hear from you. we'll tell you how you can be part of the fox 5 inauguration

many bodies were so so badly disfigured, official are having a hard time determining whether they were attackers or hostages. katie couric has scored the first interview with notre dame linebacker manti te'o. it will be the first on-camera interview given by the all- american since news broke about the dead girlfriend that apparently didn't exit. te'o and his girlfriend will appear on her daytime talk show this thursday. last week, he insisted he was a victim of a hoax, not a participant. barbara walters was admitted to a d.c. hospital over the weekend after she fell at an inauguration party. she reportedly slipped saturday night on a step at the british ambassador's residence and cut her forehead. a spokesperson says the 83-year- old is awake and alert.

and you are taking a live picture that. looks like the chinatown arch this morning all lit up. no too many people out in that part of town but didn't a lot of people heading downtown this morning. very chilly morning in the nation's capital on this inauguration day and the rush to get into the city for today's swearing-in is already under way. across the pond, europe's busiest airport is having trouble getting planes in and out thanks to mother nature i'm blast of winter weather has also closed schools and disrupt train service in britain. long ton's heathrow airport says it has canceled about 130 flights today, 10% of the daily total. also delays in paris, amsterdam and frankfurt. >> i was looking at some of the inaugural history. weather has certainly played a part. we had the armest inauguration day on record, 55 degrees and coldest, seven degrees. >> same president. >> reagan. >> and he got good and the bad.

we had the little front come in. we won't be as warm today but we will warm up. we'll have cloud cover and possibility of a for you snow showers late this afternoon and during the early evening hours and then behind that front, look out. we are talking dangerous cold around here for the next couple of days. so today, honestly, the warmest of the next seven as the bottom will drop out on these temperatures overnight. jet stream looks rather benign with a little dip there on the way. the arctic front come blasting through later today and tonight. we're not going to get above freezing for a couple of days. tomorrow's daytime highs will only be in the 20s. 45 today. winds out of the south at five to 10. it will be a brief warm-up ahead of that front. partly sunny skies. man a sprinkle or rain shower with the passage of the front. 4 tonight. we get very cold overnight and windy with winds picking up out of the northwest gusting to about 25 miles per hour.
